Examines a number of case studies where ancient sources, principally papyri from Roman Egypt, supply figures which can be scrutinized from an archaeological viewpoint. In particular the figures for the annual textile output of Oxyrhynchus extrapolated from a fragmentary papyrus can be shown to be unrealistic.
